Role of OCPC

OCPC plays a vital role in the implementation of government policy by drafting legislation and providing quality advice for the Victorian Government's legislative program. Apart from drafting Bills, the Office drafts all Government and non-government House amendments, as well as drafting and/or scrutinizing all statutory rules, including Court Rules (Supreme, County and Magistrates') and Rules for the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The Office also has a much broader role as Government Printer, which it assumed in 1996. In this role the Office is responsible for ensuring the printing and publishing of legislation, which it does through printing contracts for publications such as the Government Gazette and Parliamentary documents.

It plays a crucial role in providing Government and the community with access to, and information about, legislation both in hard copy and via its legislation and OCPC websites (www.legislation.vic.gov.au and www.ocpc.vic.gov.au). The Law Today offers a unique service to the State, by maintaining timely updates of consolidated legislation, which are provided free of charge on-line within 24 hrs of any amendments.

The Office also manages a hard copy reprint program for consolidated Principal Acts and Statutory Rules and compiles comprehensive indexes to assist users in navigating through and locating legislation.

The Career information brochure in the Employment section provides more information on the role of a drafter in OCPC.
